You may have known already or not, that I don’t own anything but high street, I’ve never really had the chance to own anything high end so I make do with the high street brands available and I can’t fault them for the price and quality!
In this blog I’m going to write about the four highlighters I own and the brushes I have used to apply them and which ones give the better effect.
Im going to start of with the brushes..
From left to right.. we have a small ‘oval’ brush because it is a lot harder than the other brushes it tends to gather more product making the highlighter appear more visible on your skin. Then your typical fan brush, personally I’m not a ‘fan’ it doesn’t seem to pick up enough product for me or give me the best affect and this is where the blushers brush comes in. on my photos i have none of the product shown from the blusher brush so its not working out as I had hoped BUT from a personal perspective it has worked better than the fan brush again I think its because it seem a bit harder so picks up some more product?
brushes oval – Ebay, Fan- spectrum, blusher – spectrum (I’m aware they need cleaning I’m waiting to find time to do a blog on that!)
So highlighters if this isn’t one of your top favourite things to apply to your face I’m not sure what is I cannot shout enough about how different a highlighter can make you look. I wasn’t for it at the beginning and now I cannot live without it!
we have New look baked highlight powder £6.99 (new look), MUA strobe & glow highlight it, £4.00 (super drug), Glow commotion £3.50 (thecosmeticbox) Technic get gorgeous £2.50 (thecosmeticbox)
Lets start with New look, Not a lot of people are familiar with new looks make-up range, I had actually brought this when it has first come into the stores, this shade in particular seems to be out of stock all the time, I feel lucky to have it especially as they had none when I went in and I found it hidden, felt like a treasure hunt.
The packaging on this is pretty simple, but also I find eye catching personally I like to see the products through the casing because I don’t always feel like I have to open it to try. The packaging is clear on what is is, who from and what is does. It is dermatologically tested and parabeen free, with a shelf live of 18 months.
Pictures never do highlighters that much justice this being the most expensive one I have at only £6.99 it is pigmented, you don’t have to press down hard to get much product. On the swatches the first swatch (if you can see it) is my finger, personally always find that my finger give a better look, second is the oval brush not much has been picked up and you cant really see it and then you have the fan brush, you can see it on this picture, I find with a fan brush it tends to cover a bigger area but the appearance is less.
out of 10 i would give it an 7/10.
Secondly MUA, everyone goes crazy for MUA which is a cosmetic brand that has a contact in the UK with super drug only so you cannot buy it anywhere else others than Superdrug and MUA website. There is two parts to this highlighter you have the powder at the top and a cream at the bottom, I haven’t shown the cream because its a mess. Not as pigmented as the powder but easier to apply and best applied with your finger.
For the price of this highlighter I feel as though you get a lot more for your money, not only do you get a cream and powder but a compact mirror, and the packaging is cute. its a rose gold top with the name of the company, and what the highlighter is. It says ‘A multi-formual compact, ideal for effortless highlighting, the cream and powder formulas in a light, luminescent shimmer allow for a perfect strobe & glow, iridescent look’. I suppose its all true!
On these pictures you can see how pigmented the highlighter is! Im sure you could see it from space. This time all 3 brushes seemed to have picked up the product, this time I prefer the look on the oval brush just because it seems to have picked up a lot more product and I love a good highlight. I also find with this one that I don’t need to build up the product so there is not much wastage.
I give this highlighter a 9/10
Thirdly W7 Glow commotion. This is becoming a new favourite its a MASSIVE shame that it hasn’t shown on the photo. This highlighter has more purposes than to make your highlight look popping, it also can be used as a shimmer and eyeshadow. W7 is not a well known brand and I’m not sure why because I LOVE there products especially for the price.
The glow commotion is more of a golden colour (bit like my skin, hence why I’m sure it didn’t show), which makes it different from the rest that are a pinky white colour and I think this is why I like it and I think because its more of a golden colour it doesn’t show up as much as the others and its more subtle, so for someone who is just getting into highlighter or wants a more natural look this may be a better option.
So I will try and talk about the brushes but as you can see they haven’t shown up on this photo much, again I find my finger better on this one than the brushes because it looks more natural and smoother and I tend to pick up more product. With the oval brush I found it picks up to much products and you end up with highlighter everywhere. The fan brush again is not my fav, because it doesn’t seem to pick up anything and doesn’t show much at all, tends to spread more over your face then where you want it. shelf life 18 months.
I rate this one a 6/10
Finally, Technic get gorgeous, My mum loves this one, I think purely for the fact is is cheap and its still half decent, not to pigmented so doesn’t over do it. Not a lot of people have heard of technic and the ones who don’t kinda turn there nose up, BUT you don’t know what your missing, it is SO SO affordable, great for the younger kids getting into it, or the older generation who has sense of not spending ££.
Again this product is in the see through casing which I love, it also has a cute pattern to it which seems to make it different from the others and I think works great because you get more? if that makes sense. This one is also great as it has a self life of 36 months so much more than the others, so its going to be usable for longer. I just personally think its cute.
Again you can’t really see this one as good a it is in real life, but you can see it better than the glow commotion! It has the same colour as New look and MUA, but has more of a subtle colour to it, its not in your face but it shows up lovely and give a great natural finish. Again I think its great for probably someone who’s starting out in make-up or someone wanting natural. The finger application is one again my favourite I think it just looks better for a better coverage, the fan brush didn’t pick this one up, which could be down to it being un level? but the oval brush didn’t seem to do much either.
I rate this one a 8/10 for the price and the quality i think its deserves to be up there.
